워싱턴한국문화원(원장 김정훈)은 애니메이션 제작사인 연필로 명상하기(대표 김장희)와 공동으로 3월 24일(금)부터 12월 29일(금)까지 문화원 1층 미디어룸에서 <한국문학과 애니메이션>(영제: K-Animation with Literature) 전시를 개최한다.
이번 전시는 한국 문화콘텐츠에 대한 다양한 관심이 증가하고 있는 워싱턴디씨 현지에서, 문학작품을 바탕으로 제작된 한국 애니메이션을 소개하여 좀 더 친숙하고 폭넓게 한국문화에 대한 이해를 높일 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 기획되었다.
<소나기(황순원)>, <봄봄(김유정)>, <메밀꽃 필 무렵(이효석)>, <운수좋은 날(현진건)>과 <무녀도(김동리)>를 원작으로 하는 총 5편의 애니메이션을 선보일 예정이다. 방문객들은 제작 과정과 애니메이션 작품 소개를 즐길 수 있으며, 애니메이션 감독 소개, 원작자 소개와 원작의 영문 번역본 등을 함께 감상할 수 있다.
전시의 시작을 알리는 <무녀도> 특별 상영회는 3월 24일(금) 오후 6시 문화원에서 진행된다. 김동리 작가의 원작 소설 <무녀도>는 1982년 노벨문학상 후보로 선정되었으며, 안재훈 감독의 애니메이션 <무녀도>는 애니메이션계의 칸이라 불리는 제44회 안시국제애니메이션 영화제에서 심사위원 특별상을 수상한 바 있다. 상영 후에는 안재훈 감독과 온라인을 통해 대화가 이어질 예정이다. 특별 상영회는 무료로 진행되며 문화원 홈페이지를 통해 사전 예약을 하여야 한다.
전시기간 중 애니메이션 개별 관람을 원하시는 분들은 문화원 운영시간에 방문하시면 무료 관람이 가능하며, 단체 관람을 원하시는 분들은 문화원을 통해 사전 문의를 하여야 한다.

A young girl whiles away time on the stepping stones that cross a brook, whilst a boy stays put awkwardly as she blocks his way. When the girl breaks the silence and the two start to get along and enjoy themselves in the mountains, a sudden rain shower pours down and the girl falls ill.

A mute girl and her father leave behind a strange painting called The Shaman Sorceress at someone’s home—as is always the case, such a picture is worth a thousand words. The story behind the painting begins with a shaman named Mohwa who lives with her mute daughter Nang-Yi. For her entire life, Mohwa has practiced shamanism, the indigenous spiritual beliefs of traditional Korea. One day, her son Wook-Yi, who has been away studying for years, returns home as a converted Christian. His arrival sparks a conflict that drives the family to tragedy.
