About the Dancers
Eun Won Lee of South Korea is in her third season with The Washington Ballet, following six years as a principal dancer with the Korean National Ballet. Lee is a distinguished recipient of The Korea Ballet Association’s Prima Ballerina Award and New Artist Award, the Korea Ballet Competition’s Senior Silver Medal and Prima Ballerina Award, the Varna Ballet Competition’s Junior Bronze Medal, the Shanghai Ballet Competition’s Junior Silver Medal, the Seoul International Ballet Competition’s Grand Prix Junior Gold Medal, and the Vaganova Prix International Competition’s Elegance Award.
Lee's diverse dance repertoire includes leading roles in The Taming of the Shrew (Cranko), Giselle, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, La Bayadère, Spartacus, Raymonda, L’Arlésienne, The Nutcracker, The Seventh Symphony, Prince Ho Dong, Holberg Pas de deux, Tchaicovsky and Poise. Her performances are sponsored by Arthur and Barbara Rothkopf. Lee received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Korea National University of Arts in Seoul, South Korea and also attended Ye Won Art School.
Joo Won Ahn, originally from the city of Wonju in South Korea, joined American Ballet Theatre (ABT) as an apprentice in January 2014 and the corps de ballet in June 2014. He was promoted to Soloist in September 2019 and to Principal Dancer in September 2020. His repertoire with ABT includes the title role in Apollo, Solor in La Bayadère, a Cavalier in Cinderella, Ali, the slave and Lankendem in Le Corsaire, Albrecht in Giselle, Persian Man in The Golden Cockerel, the Nutcracker Prince, the Russian Dance and Spanish Dance in Alexei Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker, Dionysius in Of Love and Rage, Winter in The Seasons, Bluebird, the Italian Prince and a Fairy Cavalier in Ratmansky’s The Sleeping Beauty, Neapolitan Dance in Swan Lake, leading roles in AFTERITE, The Brahms-Haydn Variations, Garden Blue, Serenade after Plato’s Symposium, Theme and Variations and Thirteen Diversions, and featured roles in AfterEffect, Bach Partita, and In the Upper Room. Ahn created Murasaki in A Gathering of Ghosts and roles in After You, New American Romance, and Songs of Bukovina. His performances with ABT are sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. William H. Told, Jr.
Ahn began his formal training in 2006 at Y.J. Ballet People Academy and Sun Hwa Art School. In 2012, he became a student at Korea National University of Arts in Seoul where his performance credits include Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty, Paquita, Raymonda, La Bayadère and Don Quixote. Ahn is the recipient of the Silver Medal at the Korean International Ballet Competition and the 3rd Prize at the 2012 Varna International Ballet Competition in Bulgaria. He was invited to join ABT Studio Company in 2013 after winning the Gold Medal at the Youth America Grand Prix in New York City.
