Special Exhibition: 70 Years of Partnership -- We Go Together!
The Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety's National Archives of Korea presents 70 Years of Partnership -- We Go Together!, a special exhibition at the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. Alliance.
The exhibition theme "We Go Together" has symbolized the ROK-U.S. alliance ever since ROK General Paik Sun-yup (1920-2020) met his ally U.S. General Douglas MacArthur in February 1951 and said those very words. The year 2023 marks 70 years since the signing of the Mutual Defense Treaty Between the United States and the Republic of Korea on October 1, 1953.
The National Archives of Korea created this special collection of historical photos and media to be exhibited in the United States to commemorate this important milestone. More than 75 photos show the history of Korea and the United States overcoming hardships and adversity through the difficult years of the 1950-53 Korean War, emerging later as an ironclad alliance. The exhibition also shows how this unique alliance has stood the test of time through to today, expanding beyond the military to include shared civic values, economic interests, and deep cultural ties.
Featured works on display include photographs of the signing of the Mutual Defense Treaty Between the United States and the Republic of Korea and the Incheon Landing Operation, which changed the course of the war on September 15, 1950. Other photos chronicle the the establishment of the ROK-US Combined Forces Command, the Republic of Korea's jouney to become an economic powerhouse through aid and reconstruction amid the ruins of the war, and lively photos of culture exchange through the decades.
70 Years of Partnership -- We Go Together! will remain on view from April 26 to June 30 (walk-in hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., excluding 12 – 1 p.m., Monday – Friday).
