Join us for K-Classic Masters: David Kim and Friends a new classical concert program on Thursday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the historic Dumbarton House in Washington, D.C., featuring Concertmaster and Philadelphia Orchestra Violinist David Kim and his quartet.

 

This event marks the launch of a new classical music series in 2022 that will showcase excellent Korean and Korean-heritage musicians active in major American orchestras, as part of the KCCDC’s longstanding K-Classic series. Please join us for an evening of familiar and reimagined classical music followed by an elegant Korean cuisine reception with the artists.

 

The David Kim Quartet comprises Philadelphia Orchestra musicians David Kim (Concertmaster & Violin), Anna Marie Ahn Petersen (Viola), Priscilla Lee (Associate Principal Cello), and Jeffrey DeVault (Piano). The concert program, with some original arrangements, includes C. Gounod - Ave Maria, J. Brahms – Sonatensatz, and J. Brahms - Piano Quartet in G minor.

About the Artists


David Kim | Concertmaster & Violin

Violinist David Kim was named concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999. Born in Carbondale, Illinois, in 1963, he started playing the violin at the age of three, began studies with the famed pedagogue Dorothy DeLay at the age of eight, and later received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School.

 

Highlights of Mr. Kim’s 2021–22 season include appearing as soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra at home in Philadelphia and also on tour; teaching/performance residencies and master classes at Dartmouth College, Georgetown University, the Manhattan School of Music, Bob Jones University, and the Prague Summer Nights Festival; continued appearances as concertmaster of the All-Star Orchestra on PBS stations across the United States and online at the Kahn Academy; as well as recitals, speaking engagements, and appearances with orchestras across the United States.


Anna Marie Ahn Petersen | Viola

Anna Marie Ahn Petersen joined The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1992, upon her graduation from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she was a student of Joseph dePasquale, then principal viola of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

 

Ms. Petersen made her solo recital debut in Seoul, Korea, in 1988, which was sponsored by Jeunesses Musicales. She has performed as soloist with the Seoul Philharmonic and the Orquestra Filarmónica de Bogotá, and she has served as principal viola of the Brandenburg Ensemble and the Jupiter Symphony. Ms. Ahn enjoys reading, cooking, mountain biking, and golf in her free time. She and her husband, Bill, have a son, Matthew.


Priscilla Lee | Associate Principal Cello

Associate Principal Cello Priscilla Lee joined The Philadelphia Orchestra with the start of the 2016-17 season. A 2005 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, she began studying at the age of five and made her solo debut in 1998 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. A native of California, she studied with Ronald Leonard at the Colburn School of Performing Arts and in 1998 went on to the Curtis Institute of Music to study with David Soyer. In 2005 she received a Master of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music, where she studied with Timothy Eddy.

 

Ms. Lee was a member of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two from 2006 to 2009. She was a founding member of Trio Cavatina, a piano trio that won the Grand Prize at the 2009 Naumburg International Competition. Ms. Lee was the principal cello of both Opera Philadelphia (2014-16) and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia (2015-16). She resides in Newtown Square, PA, with her husband, Philadelphia Orchestra violist Burchard Tang, and their two daughters.


Jeffrey DeVault | Piano

Jeffrey DeVault is a graduate of Temple University where he received the Master of Music degree in Piano Performance. In addition to winning various local piano competitions, he was a finalist in the American Guild of Organists Regional Competition for Young Organists and the Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival. He has accompanied various soloists, choirs, and chamber ensembles in the Philadelphia area including world- renowned violinist David Kim and members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is currently Associate Professor of Mathematics at Delaware County Community College in Downingtown, PA and organist at Concord Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, DE.
