The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. (KCCDC) in collaboration with the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province proudly presents Haenyeo: The Breath of Jeju, a new special exhibition of authentic equipment, activities, informational panels, videos, and books exploring the world of Jeju island's famous women free divers knows as Haenyeo (해녀), on view August 17 through November 20, 2026.
This exhibition highlights the unique local culture of Haenyeo, which was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016. Visitors can explore the lives of Jeju’s women divers, their unique diving practice known as muljil, their sustainable way of living in harmony with the sea, and the strong community tradition built on cooperation and the sharing of knowledge across generations.
Featuring authentic diving suits and tools, along with books, videos, and hands-on activities, the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to discover the cultural heritage and community spirit of the Jeju Haenyeo.
