King Sejong the Great (Han Suk-kyu) is the revered 15th century ruler of Korea’s ancient Joseon dynasty and fiercely dedicated to promoting national prosperity through the power of science. He and his brilliant adviser Jang Yeong-sil (Choi Min-sik) make great progress, but when profound new knowledge threatens the divine authority of the powers that be, 20 years of friendship and collaboration comes to a tragic conclusion.
Based on actual historical events and starring two of the biggest names in Korean cinema, director Hur Jin-ho’s 2019 film Forbidden Dream captured the imagination of audiences as well as the epic sweep of history.
