K-Cinema Special Screening for Seollal(Korean New Year) Le Grand Chef 2: Kimchi Battle (February 11 - 17)
synopsis
The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. is pleased to present a special holiday screening of Le Grand Chef: Kimchi Battle (Feb. 11 - 17) in celebration of Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year. As the first day of the lunar calendar and one of Korea's most important traditional holidays, Seollal is a nationwide event where people gather with their families to enjoy good food, fun games, and great company. This year, Seollal falls on February 12.
After the Korean president gets into a heated debate abroad over the true origins of kimchi, the National Kimchi Contest is born as means to promote the quintessentially Korean dish to the world. Famed fusion chef Jang-eun (Kim Jung-eun) returns from Japan to compete; she hides her broken-hearted resentment behind a cold mask, and aims to also shut down the family restaurant her mother seemingly cherished more than her own children. Jang-eun's step-brother Seong-chan (Jin Goo), a champion of tradition, disagrees about the fate of their once-beloved establishment and proposes that the two compete in the national contest as a means to settle their dispute. The stage is set for an epic culinary battle.
Director Baek Dong-Hun's crowd-pleasing Le Grand Chef 2: Kimchi Battle (2010) was filmed in part in Gwangju, a city known for its rich food culture, and its two main actors prepared for filming with months of cooking lessons. The film opened the Korean Film Festival in Los Angeles the year it debuted, and was praised for its lush blend of Korean food and traditional culture.
This film is viewable for one week, from Thursday, February 11 until midnight on Wednesday, February 17 (EST). Scroll down to RSVP! In Korean with English subtitles; 119 Minutes.
