K-Cinema at Home: Champion (October 12 - 18)
synopsis
Once an arm-wrestling champion, Mark (Don Lee / Ma Dong-seok) now settles for easy work as a bouncer at a club in the States, where he grew up after being adopted by an American family. But his new friend Jin-ki (Kwon Yul), a savvy visiting Korean student, has plans to change Mark’s fortunes: he promises to make them both rich if Mark returns to Korea to compete once again. Jin-ki’s motives are mixed at best, but the chance for Mark to reunite with his birth family after 30 years proves too tempting. In Korea he is embraced by Soo-jin (Han Ye-ri), a sister he has never met, and with the backing of his new family sets out to conquer a national tournament no matter the cost.
The lighthearted premise of director Kim Yong-wan's 2018 sports comedy Champion belies the star power of its cast, winning over audiences in Korea with its added emotional impact and going on to be featured internationally at the Korean Film Festival in Australia Canada's Fantasia International Film Festival.
