The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. proudly presents Newly Connected., a diverse group exhibition that illuminates the experience of immigrants acclimating in America through video, installation, and painting works by three contemporary artists: Namwon Choi, Kyoung eun Kang, and Kieun Kim.
Choi, Kang, and Kim each express their personal emotional transitions after emigrating, including the anxiety of life in a foreign environment, the hope and comfort that comes with adaptation, the process of forming new relationships with both people and places, and the resulting discovery of one’s newly formed identity. In a global era that often demands the coexistence of myriad different cultures, these Korean American artists each share through art their journey to establish and evolve the value of their own existence.
Admission to the exhibition opening reception featuring talks by the artists on Friday, September 6 at 6:00 p.m. is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Newly Connected. will remain on view during regular hours through September 27, 2019.
About the Artists
Namwon Choi captures the time between departure from one location and arrival in another, reinterpreting it as a space in which to discovers her identity between two cultures. She perceives herself as someone in perpetual motion who is longing to bridge the gap between the sense of affiliation and alienation. Choi creates a series of blue monochrome paintings and installation works that integrates highway scenery as a representation of the migration space itself.
Namwon Choi was born in South Korea and works in Savannah, GA. Choi acquired her BFA and MFA in traditional Korean painting from Hongik University in Seoul, Korea in 2002, and an MFA in drawing and painting at Georgia State University in Atlanta in 2014. Her work was recently featured at the Korean Cultural Center New York, Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles, Aqua Art Miami, National MFA Wet Paint Biennial Exhibition in Chicago, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia in Atlanta. Her most recent solo exhibition In-Betweenness was shown at Gallery 72 in Atlanta, Open Gallery in Nashville, Tenn., and Artist Homes Gallery in Berlin, Germany. She is newly represented by Sandler Hudson Gallery in Atlanta, where she will have her first solo exhibition in October, 2019. Currently Choi is professor of Foundation Studies at Savannah College of Art and Design.

Living in New York City, Kyoung eun Kang explores—and questions the meaning of—the process of forming new relationships with others and the connectedness created by transition. She has sought out an identity through such new connections and applies these attempts to develop and maintain connection in her art work. In particular, Kang strives to preserve relationships and build bonds with her family in Korea, which represents a very different time and space, through a variety of expressive formats including live performance, video, drawing, photography, and installation.
Kyoung Eun Kang was born in South Korea and works in New York City. She received her BFA and MFA in painting from Hong-ik University in Seoul and an MFA from Parsons, The New School for Design, New York, N.Y. Her solo exhibitions and projects include 1402 Seok-dong (NURTUREart, N.Y.), Every Morning and Every Evening (SOHO20’s +/- Project Space, N.Y.), Omaha Diary I (BRIC Project Room, N.Y.), Steps (HERE Arts Center, N.Y.), and Happy Birthday (A.M. Richard Fine Art Gallery Project Room, N.Y.). Her group exhibitions and performances have been featured at Queens Museum, N.Y., Socrates Sculpture Park, N.Y., A.I.R. Gallery, N.Y.; Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery in Australia, Museum of Imperial City in Beijing, China, and Seoul Musuem of Art in South Korea. She received the Grand Prize in the 8th Annual Na Hye-seok Grand Exhibition and the Special Prize at the 23rd Korea Art Grand Exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul. She is a recipient of fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, N.Y. and BRIC Media Arts, N.Y. Kang has participated in residencies including the Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency, N.Y., I-Park Foundation, Conn., ChaNorth, N.Y., New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation, N.Y., Lower East Side Rotating Studio Program, N.Y., Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Neb., and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME.
Kieun Kim expresses through vivid multimedia installations the patience and anguish that has characterized her search for identity and her journey to find hope. Kim reflects her ego onto the act of becoming a young butterfly emerging from its cocoon and reinterprets this struggle of time and space visually through geometric patterns and complex installation structures. Her large-scale experimental video installation Revealuxion presents a literal ray of hope that breaks away from convention and self-restriction to express the idea of being oneself.
Kieun Kim was born in South Korea and works in New York City and Baltimore. She received her MFA in Design and Technology at Parsons School of Design New York, N.Y. Her work spans interactive art, installations, physical computing, soft circuits, vital signs, and wearable technology. She has experimented with and presented various forms of multimedia installations. Her representative project, Revealuxion, was invited to be exhibited at Artrooms Fair Roma 2019 in Rome, Italy, Superfine! Art Fair New York 2019, New York, NY, Five Continents International Film Festival (FICOCC2016) in Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela, School 33 Art Center 2018 in Maryland, Space in Art New York Gallery 2016, N.Y., Governors Island Art Fair 2016, N.Y. and World Maker Faire 2016, N.Y.
